What Are Controlled Substances?
Controlled substances are medications that have a high potential for abuse or dependence. Because of these risks, they are regulated by the federal government. Common examples include, but are not limited to:
· Opioids (pain medications)
· Stimulants (such as those used to treat ADHD)
· Benzodiazepines (used for anxiety or insomnia)
At Saint Teresa of Avila Healthcare, we prioritize patient safety and evidence-based care. Our providers carefully evaluate each patient’s needs and determine the most appropriate treatment options. We reserve the right to decline prescribing controlled substances at our discretion. Our approach focuses on effective, sustainable care that minimizes risks associated with long-term use of controlled medications.
· Stimulant medications for ADHD, this class of medication can be prescribed at the clinic if clinically warranted.
· We do not prescribe opioids (controlled pain medications). If clinically warranted, a referral to pain management specialist will be placed.
· We do not prescribe "daily" benzodiazepine medications (used for anxiety and insomnia). As needed prescriptions will be evaluated in a case by case basis.
- Alternative Treatment Options
We believe in exploring alternative, evidence-based treatments for conditions such as anxiety, insomnia, and mood disorders. These may include:
· Non-controlled pharmacologic therapies (alternative medication classes)
· Behavioral therapies or counseling
· Referrals to specialty care as clinically appropriate
Acknowledgment
By booking an appointment with Saint Teresa of Avila Healthcare, P.A., you acknowledge and agree that:
· The clinic does not prescribe daily benzodiazepine medications.
· The clinic reserves the right to decline prescribing any controlled substances.
· You may request a referral to pain management or another appropriate specialist if controlled medication is clinically indicated.
This policy is also outlined in our new patient registration forms. Our goal is to ensure every patient receives safe, effective, and individualized care.
Yes, in order for us to be able to keep our doors open, we must charge a late-cancel/no-show fee (if you cancel within 25 hours of your appointment) . This helps us cover the administrative expenses of your appointment time. You will receive several appointment reminders to help you remember to confirm or cancel your appointment promptly if needed. Our no show / late-cancel fee is $100. Two or more late cancels / no shows in a 12 month period could result in discharge from practice.
We are planning to open doors for in person visits in Spring 2026. The mental health office will open first, then we will open our primary care office. On the meantime, if you are physically located in the state of Florida, you can access our convenient services via tele-health by booking an appointment online. Also, patients that reside in senior living facilities in Vero Beach, Fl and Sebastian, FL can call to inquire about in person consultations at their residential facilities.
