What is a Family Nurse Practitioner in Florida?
A family nurse practitioner (FNP) in Florida is a licensed, advanced practice registered nurse who provides comprehensive primary care to individuals and families of all ages, from infants to the elderly. FNPs in Florida can diagnose and treat both acute and chronic illnesses, order and interpret diagnostic tests, and prescribe medications, including controlled substances, provided they have a signed written protocol with a physician to practice independently. They focus on health promotion, disease prevention, and can work in various settings, including their own practices.
A psychiatric nurse practitioner (PMHNP) diagnoses and treats mental health conditions, providing a range of services including psychotherapy, prescribing and managing psychiatric medications, and offering counseling and education to patients and their families. They perform comprehensive patient evaluations, coordinate care with other providers, and may work in various settings such as hospitals, private practices, and community health centers.

What Are Controlled Substances?

Controlled substances are medications that have a high potential for abuse or dependence. Because of these risks, they are regulated by the federal government. Common examples include, but are not limited to:

  • Opioids (pain medications)
  • Stimulants (such as those used to treat ADHD)
  • Benzodiazepines (used for anxiety or insomnia)

At Saint Teresa of Avila Healthcare, we prioritize patient safety and evidence-based care. Our providers carefully evaluate each patient’s needs and determine the most appropriate treatment options. We reserve the right to decline prescribing controlled substances at our discretion. Our approach focuses on effective, sustainable care that minimizes risks associated with long-term use of controlled medications.

Benzodiazepines, Opioids, and Stimulants

  • In the case of stimulant medications for ADHD, this class of medication can be prescribed at the clinic if clinically warranted.
  • We do not prescribe opioids (controlled pain medications).
  • We do not prescribe daily benzodiazepine medications (used for anxiety and insomnia).
  • Patients who require ongoing benzodiazepine prescriptions will be referred to another psychiatric or mental health provider.
  • If opioid pain management is needed, your provider can refer you to a pain management specialist during your consultation.

Alternative Treatment Options

We believe in exploring alternative, evidence-based treatments for conditions such as anxiety, insomnia, and mood disorders. These may include:

  • Non-controlled pharmacologic therapies (alternative medication classes)
  • Behavioral therapies or counseling
  • Referrals to specialty care as clinically appropriate

Acknowledgment

By booking an appointment with Saint Teresa of Avila Healthcare, P.A., you acknowledge and agree that:

  • The clinic does not prescribe daily benzodiazepine medications.
  • The clinic reserves the right to decline prescribing any controlled substances.
  • You may request a referral to pain management or another appropriate specialist if controlled medication is clinically indicated.

This policy is also outlined in our new patient registration forms. Our goal is to ensure every patient receives safe, effective, and individualized care.
